Frequently Asked Questions
For resort days with a short bootpack, 15 to 20 litres carries a shovel, probe, spare layer, water and snacks. For a full ski touring day, 22 to 30 litres fits avalanche tools, skins, a puffer, a shell and lunch. Go bigger, like the Deuter Freerider Pro 32+10, if you are carrying overnight hut kit.
A ski backpack has a separate pocket for your avalanche shovel and probe, straps to carry skis or a snowboard, and often a back-panel zip so you can reach your gear without unstrapping your skis. Many also have a goggle pocket and a back panel that sheds snow, like the Deuter Freerider and Freescape packs.
Yes. Many of our packs carry a board for the bootpack. The Mammut Nirvana carries skis, splitboards and snowboards, the Arva Explore 30 carries skis, a snowboard or a splitboard, and the Deuter Freecline 15 holds a board or skis for side-country laps at Thredbo, Perisher or Hotham.
No. The packs give you a dedicated place to carry a shovel and probe, but the shovel, probe and transceiver are bought separately. Arva's Evo BT Snow Safety Pack bundles a transceiver, shovel and probe. Carry all three every time, and learn to use them on an AST 1 course.

• Back access: a back-panel zip lets you reach the main compartment with skis or a board still strapped on. The Nirvana and the Deuter Freerider packs both open from the back.
• Ski and board carry: check the pack carries what you ride. The Nirvana carries skis, splitboards and snowboards, and the Arva Explore 30 carries skis, a snowboard or a splitboard.
• Hydration: the Deuter Updays 26 and Freescape Lite 26 take a 3 L bladder, and the Freecline 15 a 2 L.
• Fit: Deuter's SL packs are its women's fit, and Mammut makes women's versions of the Nirvana 22 and 28.

Snow backpacks for Australian and New Zealand snow
Our backcountry starts close to the lifts: a skin out from Guthega or Charlotte Pass to the Main Range, a lap of Mount Feathertop, the open bowls of Bogong. Spring snow on the Main Range turns wet by early afternoon, so a back panel that sheds snow matters. Whatever pack you choose, carry an avalanche shovel, probe and transceiver in it, and do an AST 1 (Avalanche Skills Training) course before heading into avalanche terrain. For the trip to Japan or New Zealand, pair the pack with a ski bag.
