Description

The Deuter Freerider 24 is a light ski touring and freeride pack built in recycled 200D ripstop polyamide, with back-panel access, a dedicated avalanche gear pocket and carry options for skis, a snowboard or snowshoes. It is sized for a day of earning your turns.

Who it's for

Skiers and splitboarders heading beyond the lifts for the day. Deuter rate it five out of five for both freeride and ski touring. It suits a lap of the Main Range from Charlotte Pass, a tour off the Thredbo top station, or a run to Mount Feathertop when the snow is in.

Capacity, and what actually fits

24 litres carries shovel and probe in their own front pocket, plus skins, a puffy, a shell, goggles, lunch and a 3 L bladder. The pack measures 55 x 33 x 15 cm and carries a recommended 3-6 kg. The fleece-lined goggle pocket keeps a spare lens scratch-free, and the detachable mesh helmet holder takes your lid on the way up.

How it carries

The LiteSnow back uses EVA foam pads with channels between them, covered in snow-shedding Spandex, so snow does not stick to the back and melt into your layers. A flexible Delrin U-frame keeps the pack's shape, padded hip fins with zipped pockets and stabiliser straps hold it close, and the sternum buckle works one-handed with gloves on.

Fitting it

One size, for back lengths of 38-54 cm and riders roughly 158-195 cm tall. Fit it over the layers you will actually ski in: hip fins on your hip bones, shoulder straps snug, then the stabilisers.

Access and organisation

The clamshell rear opening runs below the shoulder straps, so you can lay the pack face-down in the snow and get into the main compartment with your skis still attached to the front or side. There is also a zipped top opening for quick grabs.

  • Rear U-shaped zip opening plus zipped top opening
  • Front pocket for avalanche safety gear
  • Ski carry at the side or diagonal; snowboard and snowshoe carry on the front
  • Ice axe attachment; detachable mesh helmet holder
  • Fleece-lined goggle pocket; zipped mesh inner compartment; wet compartment
  • Hydration compatible, up to 3 L
  • Zipped hip fin pockets, safety whistle, SOS label, key clip

Weight

970 g for a pack with a frame, snow-shedding back, avalanche pocket and full carry system. That keeps the weight in your legs for the skin track rather than on your back.

Looking after it

The recycled 200D ripstop is bluepass and Green Button certified, with a finish made without intentionally added PFAS.
