Frequently Asked Questions

Plasters, gauze, tape, a bandage, wipes, blister dressings, scissors and tweezers cover most day-walk injuries; the Arva First Aid Kit Lite holds these plus a rescue blanket. In Australia add broad elastic bandages for snake bite, your own medicines and an emergency blanket, and do a first aid course.

Call 000, keep the person still and calm, and apply a broad elastic bandage over the bite and then up the whole limb, using the pressure immobilisation technique taught in first aid courses. Do not wash, cut or suck the bite. Carry at least two broad bandages in snake country.

For a day walk, a compact kit like the Arva First Aid Kit Lite, built for minor injuries on a day out, plus your own additions, is a good base. For multi-day trips or a group, carry a fuller shared kit; the Sea to Summit 3 L First Aid Dry Bag holds one and keeps it dry.

What a hiking first aid kit needs

The Arva First Aid Kit Lite Full

What a hiking first aid kit needs

The Arva First Aid Kit Lite Full is sized for basic wounds and minor injuries on a day out. Inside: a rescue blanket, a bandage, adhesive tape, 8 plasters, 2 gauze pads, 4 disinfectant wipes, 2 blister plasters, scissors, tweezers and 4 safety pins, in see-through compartments.

Most walkers add to a bought kit. For Australian walking, think about:

• Compression bandages: at least two broad elastic bandages for snake bite, used with the pressure immobilisation technique.

• Personal medication: your own pain relief, antihistamine and any prescribed medicine, such as an asthma reliever or adrenaline autoinjector.

• Blister care: more blister plasters for a long walk.

• Warmth and shelter: an emergency blanket or bivvy.

• A way to call for help: a charged phone, and a PLB beyond phone range.

Keep it dry and findable

The Lightweight First Aid Dry Bag is a roll-top bag with taped seams and a clear window, marked First Aid Kit so anyone in your group can find it. Take the 1 L for day walks and rides, and the 3 L for a shared kit on multi-day trips. The fabric is rated to 10,000 mm hydrostatic head, so rain, river spray and a wet boat hull stay on the outside. It has a white lining inside, which helps you find small items fast.

Training matters most

A kit is only as good as the person using it. A first aid course teaches you to manage bleeding, sprains, hypothermia, heat illness and snake bite, and to decide when to call 000. Refresh it every few years. Check your kit before each season too: replace anything used, wet or out of date, and make sure everyone in the group knows which pack it is in.
