Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Merino cushions well, breathes and resists odour, so a pair can last more than one day on a multi-day walk. Hiking socks blend it with nylon so they do not wear through: XTM's Venture, Overland and Alpine are 55% merino, and the Humphrey Law 64F Ice & Snow sock is 76% fine merino.
Match it to the weather and your footwear. Lightweight socks like the XTM Venture suit warm days and trail shoes. Mid-weight socks like the Overland suit full days in leather boots. Heavyweight socks like the Alpine, or the Humphrey Law XHF Thermal, are for cold trips. Try boots on with the socks you will hike in.
They keep out water that soaks in from outside, such as wet grass, mud and shallow creek crossings. The XTM Monsoon has a nylon outer, a waterproof breathable DRYTEC membrane and a merino blend liner, with a 25.5 cm leg. Water that pours in over the top will still get in.
Humphrey Law makes the 61C merino hiking sock in Melbourne, and it is designed for Australian and New Zealand conditions. Alongside it we stock their 64F Ice & Snow merino sock for cold conditions, the terry-lined XHF Thermal Sock, and the 36A and 33B wool sports socks.
How to choose merino hiking socks
• Weight and cushion:How to choose merino hiking socks
• Weight and cushion: XTM's three hiking socks cover the year. The Venture is lightweight, with cushioning underfoot and a 21.5 cm leg, for warm weather and trail shoes. The Overland is mid-weight, with terry cushioning throughout and a 24 cm leg (86 g a pair), for full days in boots. The Alpine is heavyweight, with a 26 cm leg, for cold trips.
• Merino and nylon: pure wool wears through fast, so hiking socks blend it. XTM's hiking socks are 55% merino with nylon, polyester and elastane. The Humphrey Law 61C pairs a wool cushion sole and CoolMax with a hard-wearing nylon outer.
• Fit: a sock that slips will blister you. The Venture has compression zones through the arch and ankle, the Overland and Alpine an X-shaped compression zone, and all three have a seamless toe.
• Wet feet: the Monsoon Waterproof Hiking Sock has a nylon outer, a waterproof breathable DRYTEC membrane and a merino blend liner.
• Sizing: XTM socks come in three adult unisex sizes; Humphrey Law sizes run Small, Medium and Large by Australian shoe size.
The hiking socks we stock
• XTM Performance: Venture, Overland and Alpine hiking socks, the Monsoon waterproof sock, and the thick Heater winter sock with a 37.5 cm leg.
• Humphrey Law: the 61C merino hiking sock, the 64F Ice & Snow sock (76% fine merino), the XHF Thermal Sock (70% wool, terry lined throughout), and the 36A and 33B wool sports socks.
• For the snow: the XTM Merino Pro-Fit II and Slalom ski socks, with more in ski and snowboarding socks.
Hiking socks for Australian tracks
Most Australian walking is warm, so a lightweight sock like the Venture suits a spring week on the Larapinta or a day walk in Lamington. The Overland Track's mud and buttongrass call for the cushioned Overland, or the Monsoon if your feet get wet from the outside. For a winter crossing or a frosty week on the Australian Alps Walking Track, step up to the Alpine, the Humphrey Law 64F or the XHF Thermal. Whatever the trip, keep one dry pair for camp. For feet that never warm up, see heated socks.
