Such a simple thing, a rope to climb with. However, much like climbing harnesses and other climbing gear this is the support system climbers rely on. Purchasing the right climbing rope for your kit is highly important. They are so much more than fibres twisted together, they’re a climber’s lifeline. But which one is right for you?
First of all, what makes a great climbing rope? Well, the materials used lend these technical ropes their strength. Synthetic fibres wrapped around a strong core makes these ropes strong and durable. What’s more, a popular rope material, nylon, is known for its elasticity and shock absorbing abilities.
Look out for the term ‘abrasion-resistant’. You’ll see it features on many of our climbing rope product ranges. But what does this mean for your climb? A rope with an abrasion resistant outer sheath is a winner. This feature protects the inner core from damage due to rock friction or rough surfaces.
Climbing ropes can also be treated with water-resistant treatments. These ropes are referred to as “dry ropes”. Dry treated ropes are ideal for climbing in rain, snow, or humid environments, as they are less likely to become heavy and lose their strength when wet. We have a selection of “dry ropes” available to buy on our online store.
A good rope will also have a low impact force rating (measured in kilonewtons or kN). This means that the climbing rope will absorb the energy of a fall with minimal shock, protecting the climber. Also check if a rope has been tested by the UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation). At Oz Backcountry we provide all this additional information on the products we sell.
Other important information we include in our product specs is the weight and length options. If you know which dimensions you are after, we have a variety of lengths and weights in stock. Compare brand specifications to get the right rope for your climbing kit. The information is all available on each product, so you can research with ease.
Perhaps you are unsure of which length to go for, or require a lightweight solution?
