Traick 9

The Deuter Traick 9 is a stretch-mesh running vest that fits like a shirt and carries enough for a long day on the trails. Two soft flasks up front, room for a bladder behind, and pockets for gels, phone and poles where you can reach them without breaking stride.

Who it's for

Trail runners heading out for long runs and ultras: a summer lap of the Warrie Circuit at Springbrook, a training run on the Great North Walk, or race day at Ultra-Trail Australia where mandatory kit has to fit somewhere. Deuter rate it five out of five for trail running and three for hiking, so it also suits fast-packers on long day hikes. The recommended 2-5 kg load is water, food, a shell and the safety kit.

Capacity and fit

9 litres takes the two 500 ml flasks in the shoulder strap pouches, a 1.5 L bladder in the rear compartment, a wind shell and a warm layer, with gels, bars and a phone in the eight shoulder strap pockets. The vest measures 39 x 24 x 14 cm. Four-way stretch polyamide mesh wraps you like a garment, and an adjustable bungee sternum system and modular bungee cords at the sides cinch it down so a half-empty vest does not bounce on a descent.

Size by chest: S fits a 89-95 cm chest and M fits 96-102 cm. Between sizes, take the smaller for a tighter, bounce-free fit if you mostly run with flasks, and the larger if you often carry a full bladder and layers.

Drinking and refilling

The two included HydraPak 500 ml soft flasks sit in pouches on the shoulder straps, so you drink without stopping and the flasks shrink as they empty. Stash pockets at the back and side access let you reach a jacket or refill the bladder without taking the vest off at an aid station.
