Avalanche Beacons

An avalanche beacon (also called a transceiver) sends a signal while you tour and searches for buried partners if something goes wrong. We stock digital three-antenna beacons from Mammut and Arva. A beacon only works with a probe and shovel alongside it, carried by everyone in the group, and with the training to use them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Beacon, transceiver and snow beacon all mean the same device. It transmits a 457 kHz signal while you tour and switches to search mode to find others. Every model we stock is a digital three-antenna unit, and they all work with beacons from other brands.

Brands compare beacons by search strip width, the path covered on each pass. Across our range it runs from 50 m (Arva Evo5+) to 70 m (Mammut Barryvox, Barryvox S and Barryvox 2) and 80 m (Arva Neo BT Pro, 90 m in analog mode). A wider strip means fewer passes over the debris.

If you tour, splitboard or snowshoe in steep terrain beyond the resort boundary, yes. Avalanches occur on steep lee slopes in the Australian Alps. A beacon must be paired with a probe and shovel, and you need training, such as an AST 1 course, to use them.

The Arva Evo5+ takes one AA alkaline battery. The Barryvox range, Evo BT and Neo BT Pro take three AAA. Arva says not to use rechargeable cells. Take the batteries out over summer and start each season with fresh ones.

How to choose an avalanche beacon

Every avalanche transceiver transmits on 457 kHz, so a Mammut and an Arva will find each other. The differences come down to these:

How to choose an avalanche beacon

Every avalanche transceiver transmits on 457 kHz, so a Mammut and an Arva will find each other. The differences come down to these:

• Search strip width. This is how wide a path you cover on each pass. The Arva Evo5+ is 50 m, the Evo BT 60 m, all three Barryvox models 70 m, and the Arva Neo BT Pro 80 m (90 m in analog mode).

• Ease of use. Large backlit screens, a direction arrow and distance readout, and controls that work in gloves. The Barryvox and Barryvox S are known for simple interfaces.

• Multiple burials. Marking a located person matters when more than one is buried. The Barryvox, Evo5+, Evo BT and Neo BT Pro all list a marking function.

• App and updates. The Barryvox 2, Evo BT and Neo BT Pro connect by Bluetooth for updates, settings and practice searches.

• Batteries. The Evo5+ runs on one AA battery. The others take three AAA. Use alkaline cells unless the manual says otherwise.

Mammut Barryvox and Arva beacons we stock

• Mammut Barryvox ($598.45): 70 m strip, about 300 hours in SEND, 210 g. A good first beacon.

• Mammut Barryvox S ($708.75): digital/analog with Smart Search and Rescue SEND.

• Mammut Barryvox 2 ($781): compact, voice guidance, Mammut app.

• Arva Evo5+ ($550): 165 g with its single AA battery, the lightest we carry.

• Arva Evo BT ($599.95): motion-sensor revert to transmit, rotary selector.

• Arva Neo BT Pro ($748.12): widest strip, made in France, comes with a holster.

To buy a beacon, probe and shovel in one go, see the Arva avalanche safety packs.

Ski and snowboard beacons for Aussie and NZ terrain

Whether you ski the Main Range out of Thredbo, splitboard the Bogong High Plains or head to New Zealand or Japan for a trip, every person wears a beacon on transmit and carries a probe and shovel. Do a group check at the trailhead before anyone drops in. Book an avalanche course such as AST 1 and practise with your beacon before the season, because a beacon you can't use fast won't help.
