Description

The Mammut Barryvox 2 is a compact digital avalanche transceiver with three antennas and a 70 m range. It transmits on 457 kHz, runs on two AAA alkaline batteries for around 450 hours in SEND, and comes with Mammut's Barryvox carrying system so you wear it on your upper body.

Who it's for

Ski tourers, backcountry skiers and mountaineers heading into avalanche terrain, where everyone in the group wears a transceiver. The Barryvox 2 keeps the controls simple: one orange switch for OFF, SEND and SEARCH, a clear screen, and guidance that talks you through the search. Pair it with the Barryvox app to run search practice before the season.

How it performs in a search

  • Range: 70 m.
  • Antennas: three, in a digital device.
  • Multiple burials: Auto-Select takes you to the strongest signal first, a marking function sets found subjects aside, and the screen gives an overview of everyone still buried.
  • Reverse direction function: stops you walking the wrong way on a 180-degree error.
  • Interference Guard: manages and reduces signal interference and shows it on screen in send and search.

Using it under pressure

In a search the Barryvox 2 guides you three ways at once: a sequence of tones that guides you towards the buried subject, voice instructions through every search phase, and an on-screen arrow and distance. If you are caught in a second slide while searching, Rescue SEND switches your unit back to transmitting, and if you stop moving for four minutes in SEARCH, a motion sensor flips it to SEND so your group can find you.

Certification and standards

The Barryvox 2 is personal protective equipment, transmitting on 457 kHz.

Maintenance and checks

Every time you switch on, the Barryvox 2 tests its transmit and search functions, then runs regular transmission and battery tests. Group check confirms the frequency and signal strength of your partners' transceivers before you set off. Firmware updates and settings run through the Barryvox app over Bluetooth, and the batteries come included.
