Frequently Asked Questions
Start with a thermal top and pants, then a waterproof ski jacket and snow pants. Add one pair of ski socks (not cotton, and not two pairs), waterproof gloves or mitts, and a beanie or thin balaclava that fits under your helmet. Leave jeans and cotton hoodies at home: they soak up snow and stay cold.
Japan's powder comes with real cold, especially in Hokkaido in January and February. Wear a midweight merino thermal set, an insulated ski jacket or a shell with a warm mid layer, insulated snow pants, mitts, ski socks and a balaclava for windy chairlifts. Pack a spare base layer so you start each day dry.
Not much. Both need waterproof fabric, taped seams, a powder skirt and boot gaiters. Snowboard jackets and pants are often cut looser and longer, but most snow clothing works for both, and XTM describes jackets such as the Paradigm as built for skiers and snowboarders.
Yes. We stock XTM kids snow jackets, snow pants with braces, one-piece snow suits from baby sizes, kids gloves and mitts, thermals, beanies, balaclavas and ski socks. Our kids snow clothing page brings them all together.
How to layer snow clothing
Ski clothing works as a system of three layers, plus your hands, feet and head. How to layer snow clothing
Ski clothing works as a system of three layers, plus your hands, feet and head.
• Base layer: a merino or synthetic thermal top and pants against your skin. Shop thermals.
• Mid layer: most of our ski jackets have insulation built in. Under a hardshell, add a fleece or an XTM WoolXLoft jacket or vest.
• Outer layer: a waterproof snow jacket and snow pants with taped seams and a powder skirt or boot gaiters to seal out snow.
• Extremities: snow gloves and mitts, ski socks and a beanie or balaclava that fits under your helmet.

Ski clothing for Japan and the Aussie Alps
A January lift day in Hokkaido is colder and drier than most days at Perisher, with temperatures of -10 °C and below common up the mountain. Put the warmth in your layers: a 230 gsm merino thermal, an insulated jacket, a balaclava for the chairlift and mitts if your hands run cold. Here, from June to September, Thredbo, Falls Creek and Hotham often see wet snow and even rain, so waterproofing and venting matter more than extra insulation.
