Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. We stock the BeFree AC Replacement Cartridge, BeFree carbon inserts and mouthpieces, the BeFree Softflask, the Vario Ceramic Prefilter Disc and the Pocket Ceramic Replacement Cartridge. The BeFree AC cartridge fits 42 mm BeFree soft flasks but not the BeFree Gravity or Bottle versions. Check the part number against your filter.
No. The BeFree, Vario, Drip Ceradyn and Pocket are microfilters. They remove bacteria and protozoan cysts such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and sediment, but Katadyn do not list viruses. If there is any risk of viruses in the water, boil it or use a disinfectant after filtering.
Katadyn rate the BeFree cartridge at up to 1,000 litres, depending on water quality. When the flow slows, shake or swish it in clean water. When that no longer brings the flow back, fit a new one. The BeFree AC carbon insert lasts 200 litres or three months, whichever comes first.
Katadyn water filters we stock
• BeFree Gravity 10L: a 10 L bag with a 0.1 micron hollow fibre filter and a hose. It runs at up to 2 L a minute, weighs about 284 g and treats up to 1,000 L. Hang it and let gravity filter for the group.
• Vario: a hand pump for one to four people. A 0.3 micron glassfibre cartridge, a carbon core for taste and a switchable ceramic prefilter give about 2 L a minute in Faster Flow mode. The cartridge is rated to 2,000 L.
• Drip Filter Ceradyn: a free-standing filter for groups of ten or more. Three 0.2 micron ceramic elements give about 4 L an hour with no pump, rated to 150,000 L. It weighs 3.3 kg, so it stays at base camp.
Katadyn replacement parts
• BeFree: the BeFree AC Replacement Cartridge (1,000 L, fits 42 mm BeFree soft flasks, not the Gravity or Bottle versions), carbon inserts in a 3-pack, silicone mouthpieces in a 3-pack and the 0.5 L or 1 L Softflask (flask only).
• Vario: the Ceramic Prefilter Disc, part 8015035.
• Pocket: the Ceramic Replacement Cartridge, field cleanable and rated to about 50,000 L.
• Camp Series Shower Adaptor for the Base Camp Pro 10L and Gravity Camp 6L bags.
What a Katadyn filter removes
Every Katadyn filter here is a microfilter. Katadyn list bacteria and protozoan cysts such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, plus sediment. They do not list viruses. Where viruses are a risk, Katadyn's advice is to boil the water or treat it with a disinfectant as well. For silty Australian dams and waterholes, let the water settle first and filter from the clear water on top. Compare brands in Hiking & Camping Water Filters.
