Frequently Asked Questions
In warm weather, a light UPF 50+ or merino shirt, quick-dry hiking pants, a brimmed hat and wool socks. In cool or changeable weather, add a fleece and a seam-sealed rain jacket. For winter or alpine walks, start with merino thermals and carry rain pants, gloves and a beanie.
For multi-day walks, usually yes. Merino resists odour, so one shirt can last several days, and it stays comfortable over a wide range of temperatures. Synthetic fabrics dry faster and cost less, which suits hot, sweaty day walks. Many walkers mix both.
Mainly XTM Performance, the Australian brand behind most of our rain jackets, fleece, hiking shirts and pants, thermals and snow wear, and Ottie Merino, whose merino thermals and 100% superfine merino hiking shirts are made in Melbourne. We also stock Humphrey Law socks and Sunday Afternoons hats.

How to dress for a day outside
Think in three layers. A base layer moves sweat off your skin: merino for multi-day walks and cold weather, a UPF 50+ shirt for hot, open tracks. A mid layer holds warmth: fleece or a wool-insulated jacket. An outer layer keeps out wind and rain: a seam-sealed rain jacket and rain pants. Add a hat for the sun or a beanie for the cold, and wool socks.
Clothing for Australian conditions
A summer day on the Larapinta or a Queensland rainforest track calls for sun cover and quick-drying fabric more than warmth. The Overland Track and the Tassie south-west can turn cold and wet in any month, so pack a fleece, rain jacket and rain pants. For the Aussie Alps from June to September, or a Japan ski trip, layer thermals under insulated snow wear.
Why buy from Oz Backcountry
