Description
The Komperdell Carbon FXP.4 Summit Vario is a four-section carbon trekking pole that folds to 41 cm and springs back together on its own when you release the segments. A forged aluminium Powerlock 3.0 lever sets the length anywhere from 115 to 135 cm, and the padded strap stays comfortable on long days.
Who it's for
Walkers who want poles for the big climbs and descents and want them out of the way the rest of the time. Think the steep pinch up Mount Bogong, the scree on the way to Federation Peak, or a long day on the Australian Alps Walking Track where the poles come out for the ascent and go back on the pack for the ridge. Hold the grip, release the segments and the pole deploys on its own, ready to walk.
Weight against durability
All four sections are carbon, 18/16 mm in diameter, and Komperdell call it a lightweight carbon trekking pole. Treat carbon with a little care around sharp rock edges.
Locking and adjustment
Two systems hold it together. The FXP fold is self-deploying, with a solid mechanical connection of the individual segments. The Powerlock 3.0 lever, forged from aluminium and Komperdell's strongest lock, sets the length from 115 to 135 cm: shorten it for the descent, lengthen it for the climb, then flip the lever shut.
Packed length
Folded, the pole measures 41 cm, short enough to slide inside a daypack or strap to the side of a pack when you need both hands for a scramble, a ladder or a bus at the end of the walk.
Looking after it
Dry and clean the poles after every trip and store them with the Powerlock open. Never put lubricant on the shaft or the lock, and never extend a pole past its maximum length mark.
