Description

The Sea to Summit Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag is a roll-top dry bag and a compression sack in one. Stuff a sleeping bag in, roll the top, pull the four straps, and the air leaves through the Evac base while the water stays outside. The body is 70D recycled nylon with a 10,000 mm hydrostatic head, tough enough to ride on a bike or in a kayak hatch.

What it keeps dry, and how dry

The main fabric is polyurethane-coated 70D nylon rated to 10,000 mm hydrostatic head, and the seams are double-stitched then tape-sealed. The base is Evac fabric, a waterproof laminate that lets air through, so you squeeze the bag down without a purge valve to fiddle with or forget to close. A hypalon roll-top stops water wicking along the fold.

That handles a day of rain on the back of a bike, spray and bilge water in a kayak, and a soaked pack on the Western Arthurs. It is a roll-top, so keep it out of full submersion: strap it on deck or stow it in a hatch.

Capacity and what fits

  • 5 L (98 g): a down jacket, or a summer quilt.
  • 8 L (113 g): a compact down sleeping bag, or a jacket and thermals.
  • 13 L (136 g): a three-season down sleeping bag.
  • 20 L (160 g): a synthetic or winter sleeping bag, or the clothes for a week.
  • 35 L (189 g): a big winter bag, or sleeping bag and puffy gear together.

Not sure between two? We'd size up. A bag with room to spare rolls shut properly, and the straps take up the slack.

Material and durability

The body is bluesign approved 70D nylon made from recycled yarn, with a PFAS-free water-repellent finish on the outside and a white coating inside, so you can find the head torch at the bottom without emptying the lot. It is flexible enough to push into an awkward corner of a pack and sturdy enough for paddling and bikepacking. Keep it clear of sharp edges and rough rock, as you would any fabric dry bag.

The roll-top closes with a 15 mm Field Repair Buckle: if one breaks on a trip, a new buckle goes on and the bag carries on.

Packing and carrying

Four straps pull the load down evenly so it does not bulge into a football. Two of them have side-release buckles, so you get back into the bag quickly at camp. A webbing handle on the base gives you something to grab when you haul it out of a full pack. Once it is compressed, wedge it in tight and it stays small.

FAQ's

Is the Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag waterproof?
The Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag has a 10,000 mm hydrostatic head, taped seams and a non-wicking roll-top, which keeps gear dry through heavy rain and spray. Like any roll-top dry bag, keep it out of full submersion, because water can work through the closure.

How does the Evac compression dry bag let air out?
The base of the Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag is an air-permeable, waterproof laminate. When you tighten the straps, air is pushed out through the base and water cannot come back in, so the bag needs no purge valve.

Can you use the Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag for kayaking?
Yes. The 70D nylon Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag is built for paddle sports and bikepacking as well as use inside a pack. Keep it away from sharp or abrasive surfaces, and stow it where it will not sit under water.

What size compression dry bag do I need for a sleeping bag?
Most three-season down sleeping bags suit the 13 L Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag, and synthetic or winter bags the 20 L. Choose the larger size if you are between two: the bag rolls shut more easily and the straps take up the slack.

How much does the Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag weigh?
The Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag weighs 98 g in the 5 L, 113 g in the 8 L, 136 g in the 13 L, 160 g in the 20 L and 189 g in the 35 L.

How do you pack an Evac compression dry bag so it stays small?
Fill the Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag, roll the top and clip it, then tighten the four straps evenly to push the air out. Pack it into a tight space in your pack straight away so it cannot draw air back in.

Can the buckle on the Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag be replaced?
Yes. The roll-top on the Evac Lightweight Compression Dry Bag closes with a 15 mm Field Repair Buckle, which is designed to be swapped for a new one if it breaks, so the bag stays in service.
