The Deuter Vertrail 16 is a running vest and an alpine pack in one. It wraps your torso so you can move fast and scramble freely, rolls closed against rain and spray, and straps an ice axe, a rope or crampons to the outside when the route gets serious.

Who it's for

Fast mountain walkers, scramblers, alpine climbers and trail runners. Deuter rate it five out of five for mountain climbing and four for climbing and trail running. Think a Main Range run in shoulder season, or a spring climb in New Zealand. The 1-3 kg recommended load is light and quick.

Capacity and fit

16 litres, with a roll-top that extends when you need room for a shell and a warm layer. An inside pocket and key clip keep valuables tidy. The vest straps are wide and shaped, with two detachable, precisely adjustable sternum straps and stabiliser straps, and Deuter's Lite back hugs your body so the load does not sway. One size covers back lengths of 38-54 cm, which Deuter match to people about 158-195 cm tall. The pack measures 52 x 23 x 18 cm.

Drinking and refilling

Two mesh soft flask pouches on the shoulder straps let you drink without stopping, and the pack takes a hydration bladder of up to 3 L for longer days. A moisture barrier against your back keeps sweat away from the contents.

Weather and carry

Hard-wearing TPU-coated polyamide, taped and welded seams, TPU-coated zips and a roll-top lid keep rain and spray from any direction out of the main pack to IPX4, as long as the top is rolled and closed correctly. Two bungee cords move around to carry crampons, a rope or a jacket and to compress the load. There is an ice axe attachment, a trekking pole holster on the shoulder strap, a zipped shoulder pocket for a phone or GPS, and a stowable helmet holder.

Looking after it

The Vertrail is made from 220D TPU-coated polyamide with a finish made without intentionally added PFAS. Deuter back it with a 2-year warranty.
