Utilion 34+5

The Deuter Utilion 34+5 is a roll-top pack that does the commute on Monday and the weekend away on Friday. A padded laptop sleeve and organiser zip in behind the back panel, a zip-out divider keeps shoes apart from your clothes, and the roll-top opens up when the trip needs more room.

Who it's for

Commuters, students and travellers who want one bag for the office and the weekend. Ride the ferry into the city with a laptop and gym gear, take it on a long weekend in Hobart, or use it as the day bag on a working trip. The recommended load is 4-8 kg.

Capacity, and what actually fits

34 litres in a 53 x 32 x 21 cm body, plus extra room when you unroll the zip-secured top. A zip-out divider gives you a separate bottom section for shoes or a toiletry bag, with clothes on top. Stretch side pockets carry a bottle and an umbrella, and a key clip keeps your keys found.

How it carries

The Airstripes back uses padding strips separated by ventilation channels and 3D mesh, so only a small part of the pack touches your back and air moves across most of it. A trapezoid lumbar pad spreads the load low on your back while your hips move freely. Padded shoulder straps, stabiliser straps and a 2-way adjustable sternum strap steady it, and the hip fins detach when you do not need them.

Fitting it

One size for back lengths of 38-54 cm, which Deuter match to people about 158-195 cm tall. Adjust the shoulder straps so the lumbar pad sits in the small of your back, then use the stabilisers to pull the top of the pack in.

Access and organisation

The main compartment closes with a drawcord under the roll-top, so you can stuff a jacket in quickly. A zip in the back panel opens straight into the zip-in organiser, where a padded sleeve holds a laptop up to 16 inches (40.6 cm) and a tablet and documents sit in their own pockets. The organiser lifts out when you want the whole compartment for clothes.

Looking after it

The body combines 150D polyester with 300D and 500D recycled polyester, finished with a DWR made without intentionally added PFAS, and the pack is bluepass and Green Button certified. Deuter back it with a 2-year warranty.
