Mondego SB 16

The Deuter Mondego SB 16 is a seat-post saddle bag for bikepacking and touring: a strapped harness that holds a removable 16 litre roll-top dry bag behind your saddle. It is the easy way to carry an overnight kit without fitting racks.

Who it's for

Riders getting into bikepacking, and road and gravel riders who want more than a jersey pocket. Deuter rate it five out of five for road and gravel and for touring, and four for bikepacking. It suits a two-day gravel loop through the Scenic Rim or a credit-card tour along the Great Victorian Rail Trail.

Fitting it to your bike

The harness mounts without tools: two straps wrap the seat post and two buckle straps clip to the saddle rails, then the dry bag slides in and buckles to the harness at the sides. Check you have enough seat post showing above the frame and room between the saddle and the rear wheel for a 55 cm long bag, especially on smaller frames or full-suspension bikes. Deuter recommend protecting the seat post with film or a foam pad where the straps sit, as grit under a strap can dull the paint over time.

Capacity and what fits

16 litres takes a sleeping bag and liner, or a tent body and your camp clothes. The roll-top compresses the dry bag around what is inside, so a half load sits as tight as a full one. A bungee cord and mesh pouch on top hold a rain jacket or snacks you want without opening the bag. Recommended load is 2-5 kg.

Weatherproofing

The main fabric is 420D polyamide with a double PU coating rated to a 1500 mm water column, and the roll-top keeps rain out of the opening. That handles road spray and a wet afternoon; for days of heavy rain, pack electronics in their own bag inside.

Stability when loaded

Four mounting points, a reinforced base and a roll-top that cinches the load down stop the bag swinging when you stand to climb. Pack the heaviest gear forward, close to the seat post.
