Gigant

The Deuter Gigant is the big daily-carry pack: laptop, folders, lunch, gym gear and the rest, organised so you are not digging at the bus stop. It is a backpack built by an outdoor brand for the city, with a ventilated back for the walk from the station in a Brisbane summer.

Who it's for

Uni students, office commuters and teachers who carry a full load every day. Deuter rate it five out of five for school and university and four for office and everyday use. The recommended 3-6 kg load is a large laptop, a couple of folders or textbooks, a lunch box, a water bottle and a jacket.

Capacity, and what actually fits

32 litres holds a laptop up to 17 inch in its padded compartment, a separate document compartment for A4 folders, and a main compartment big enough for a change of clothes, lunch and a jumper. The pack measures 50 x 33 x 22 cm. Stretch side pockets take a water bottle and an umbrella, and compression straps pull it in on light days.

How it carries

The Airstripes back puts two padded strips against you with a ventilation channel and 3D mesh between them, so air moves across most of your back. Stabiliser straps and a 2-way adjustable sternum strap keep a heavy laptop from pulling the pack away from you, and the waist belt takes weight onto your hips on a long walk, or comes off when you do not want it.

Fitting it

The Gigant comes in one size for back lengths of 44-54 cm, which Deuter match to people around 170-195 cm tall. Wear it high, with the shoulder straps snug enough that the bottom of the pack sits above your belt line, and clip the sternum strap across your chest.

Access and organisation

A front organiser compartment keeps pens, cables, phone and keys sorted, with a key clip so you are not hunting at the door. An inside valuables compartment holds your wallet and cards, padded grab handles let you carry it like a briefcase, and a padded, sturdy base means you can set it down with a laptop inside.

Weight

1100 g for a 32 litre pack with full padding for a large laptop, a structured base and a ventilated harness. It is built to carry a heavy daily load in comfort rather than to be the lightest bag in the office.

Looking after it

The body is 300D polyester ripstop with hard-wearing 600D polyester, finished with a DWR made without intentionally added PFAS. Deuter back it with a 2-year warranty.
