Futura 32

The Deuter Futura 32 is a big-day pack that breathes. A suspended mesh back keeps air moving behind you on the climb, and a separate bottom compartment and two lid pockets keep a full day's kit, or a light overnighter, in order.

Who it's for

Walkers who head out early and come back late, and those who like a hut night without a full expedition pack. Deuter rate it five out of five for hiking, and its 4-8 kg recommended load suits a full day on the Gold Coast hinterland's Border Track, a summit of Mount Barney, or a night in a hut on the Australian Alps Walking Track with a sleeping bag in the bottom.

Capacity, and what actually fits

32 litres, 66 x 30 x 23 cm. The bottom compartment takes a sleeping bag or a puffy and a spare set of clothes, separated by a zip-out divider. Above it goes a 3 L bladder in its sleeve, lunch, a stove and a first aid kit. The mesh front pocket swallows a wet shell, and stretch side pockets carry bottles.

How it carries

The Aircomfort back tensions mesh across a flexi spring steel frame, leaving a gap between the pack and your back for airflow. The softer mesh runs right down into the lumbar area, so the pack wraps your lower back without trapping heat. Pivoting ActiveFit shoulder straps move with your stride, and padded hip fins cinch with Pull-Forward adjustment. The straps and fins are one continuous piece of padding, so nothing rubs where they join.

Fitting it

One size, made for back lengths of 44-54 cm, which Deuter match to walkers around 170-195 cm tall. Load it up, set the hip fins on your hips, then snug the shoulder and stabiliser straps.

Access and organisation

The main compartment loads from the top with a drawcord under the lid. The lid carries one pocket outside for sunscreen and snacks and one inside for keys on the clip. Two hip fin pockets hold a phone and a muesli bar, and there is a wet compartment inside, a glasses stow loop and an ice axe and pole attachment.

Weight

1350 g empty. Five extra litres over the Futura 27 and a bottom compartment add 100 g, which buys space for a hut night's sleeping bag and the layers a big alpine day asks for.

Looking after it

The fabric is 210D recycled polyamide X-Grid with a DWR finish made without intentionally added PFAS, and the pack is bluepass and Green Button certified.
