Description
The Sea to Summit Big River Dry Backpack is a heavy-duty roll-top dry bag with a harness sewn on, so the bag that keeps your gear dry on the water is also the bag you carry up the bank. It is made from 420D ripstop nylon with a white TPU laminate inside, and comes in 30 L, 50 L and 75 L.
What it keeps dry, and how dry
The fabric carries a 10,000 mm hydrostatic head, the seams are double-stitched and fully taped, and the roll-top closes with a non-wicking hypalon strip so water does not creep along the fold. Roll the top down firmly, clip the buckles and your sleeping bag stays dry through spray, rain and a wet hull.
If you snap a buckle, the Field Repair Buckles unscrew with a Phillips screwdriver and a new one goes on in its place.
Capacity and what fits
- 30 L (22 x 29 x 55 cm, 670 g): a day on the water or a wet-weather commute, with room for spare clothes, lunch and a camera.
- 50 L (28.5 x 34.5 x 60.4 cm, 760 g): an overnight paddle, with sleeping bag, mat and a change of clothes.
- 75 L (36.5 x 33 x 67.5 cm, 820 g): multi-day river and touring trips where all your soft gear goes in one bag.
There are no inside pockets. Pack small items in their own stuff sacks and the white interior makes them easy to spot.
Material and durability
420D ripstop nylon is the reason to choose the Big River: it is made to be dragged over a gravel bar on the Snowy or strapped down for a week on the Oodnadatta Track. The oval base is triple-coated where the wear happens, and the laminate is non-PFAS.
Packing and carrying
The EVA foam harness has a sternum strap and a removable 38 mm webbing waist strap that holds the pack steady on a portage. Plan on around 20 kg for a short carry and around 12 kg over a longer distance, and put the heavy items closest to your back.
Lash rails and a grab handle give you tie-down points on a kayak deck or a motorbike rack, and the oval shape sits flat instead of rolling.
