Description
Description
The Mammut Carbon Probe 240 Light is a carbon fibre avalanche probe that weighs 198 g, folds to 38 cm and extends to 240 cm, with a telescopic locking system. Carbon keeps it stiff and light, so it earns its place on long touring days when every gram in the pack counts.
Who it's for
Ski tourers and splitboarders covering big distances: spring traverses of the Main Range, long days in the Victorian high country, multi-day trips in New Zealand and Japan. It folds to 38 cm. Every person in the party carries a probe alongside their transceiver and shovel.
How it performs in a search
The 11 mm carbon segments give 240 cm of reach, and the shaped tip is made to cut through avalanche debris without wasting effort. Mammut gives it precise probe scaling on both sides and a 360-degree visual depth guide, and the bottom section is highlighted orange as a visual guide as you near a buried victim.
Using it under pressure
The telescopic locking system is suitable for use with gloves: Mammut says the glove-friendly, high-tensile telescopic lock and ergonomic handle lock the probe into place quickly and reliably. The handle can be clipped onto the extended probe so it stays out of the way, and the probe comes in a cover with an integrated emergency plan.
Certification and standards
Mammut states that every one of its avalanche probes is UIAA certified for efficient rescue, durability and ergonomic handling.
Maintenance and checks
Assemble the probe fully before each season and each tour: it should lock firmly and stand straight. Check the cord for fraying and the carbon segments for cracks or splits, and let it dry out of its cover before storing it.
