Frequently Asked Questions
For one or two nights with light gear, 35–45 L. For three to six days, like the Overland Track, most people use 50–65 L. Longer trips, winter gear or carrying for others need 70 L or more. The +10 on Deuter packs is extra space in the extending lid.
SL is Deuter's women's fit. The back length is shorter and the shoulder straps and hip belt are shaped for a narrower frame. Many smaller men also find SL models fit well. EL models are the opposite: a longer back for taller walkers.
Most packs aren't waterproof, so in wet places like Tasmania it's worth having one. We stock Deuter Raincover II, III and Ultra to fit different pack sizes. A pack liner or dry bags inside give a second layer of protection for your sleeping bag and clothes.
Our current Mammut packs are ski touring and alpine models such as the Nirvana, Trion Nordwand and Eiger Nordwand. You'll find them under Snow Backpacks and Climbing Backpacks. For overnight and multi-day hiking, every pack in this collection is Deuter, from the Aircontact Lite to the Aircontact Pro 85+10.

• 35–45 L: one or two nights with light gear, or summer walks. Look at the Aircontact Ultra 35+5 SL and 45+5 SL, Aircontact Lite 35+10 SL and 40+10 and Futura Pro 34–40.
• 50–65 L: the most common size for three to six days, like the Overland Track. Options include the Aircontact Lite 50+10, Aircontact Core 50+10 to 65+10 SL, Futura Air Trek 50+10 to 60+10, Access 55 and Access Pro 60 SL and 65, and Voyager 60+10 SL and 65+10.
• 70 L and up: long trips, winter gear or carrying for kids. Aircontact Core 70+10, Aircontact Pro 65+10 SL, 75+10 and 85+10.
The "+10" or "+5" means the lid and collar extend to give you that much extra space when you need it.
Fit matters more than features. Deuter's SL models are its women's fit, with a shorter back and shaped shoulder straps. EL means extra long, for taller walkers. Load the pack with 10–15 kg when you try it on, and make sure the hip belt carries most of the weight.
What we stock: Deuter hiking backpacks
Every pack here is Deuter. We also stock kids' packs (Fox 30 and 40, Junior) and Deuter pack raincovers (Raincover II, III and Ultra) sized to suit different pack volumes.
Searching for Mammut? Our Mammut packs are ski touring and alpine models, found in Snow Backpacks and Climbing Backpacks.
Hiking backpacks for Australian conditions
Tassie wet is real: on the Overland Track or in the Western Arthurs, a pack raincover plus a liner or dry bags inside keeps your sleeping bag dry. On the Larapinta you may carry several litres of water between tanks, so choose a pack with a hip belt that handles the extra weight, and leave room for a hydration bladder. In Queensland humidity, a pack with a ventilated back panel makes a sweaty climb more bearable.
