Frequently Asked Questions
A seat pack, a frame bag and a handlebar bag carry a full overnight kit on most bikes. Add a top tube bag for snacks and your phone. Start with a seat pack and a bar bag if you're unsure: they fit almost any frame and carry the bulk of your gear.
A small saddle bag, like the Lezyne S-Caddy or Deuter Bike Bag, holds a tube, levers and a tool for day rides. A bikepacking seat pack, like the Topeak Backloader or Restrap Saddle Bag, extends behind the seatpost and carries clothes or a sleeping bag for overnight trips.
Most handlebar bags strap to flat or drop bars, but check the space between your brake levers and that cables won't be squashed. Drop bars often need a narrower roll, such as the Topeak Tubular Barbag Slim. Flat-bar mountain bikes take wider rolls like the Topeak Frontloader or Restrap Bar Pack.
Roll-top bags and bags with an internal dry bag, such as the Restrap Bikepacking Saddle Bag + Dry Bag, are built to keep water out. Zipped bags resist showers but can leak in heavy rain. For a wet trip, put your sleeping bag and clothes in dry bags inside.
How to choose bike packing bags
Each bag has a job. Pack heavy items low and central, and bulky light items at the ends. Most overnight set-ups use three: a saddle bag, a frame bag and a handlebar bag.How to choose bike packing bags

Bike saddle bags and seat packs
A bikepacking seat pack extends behind the seatpost and carries soft gear like clothes and a sleeping bag. The Topeak Backloader and Backloader X, Restrap Bikepacking Saddle Bag + Dry Bag, Deuter Mondego SB 16, Evoc Seat Pack WP and USWE Roll-Top Saddle Bag are the big ones.
For a tube and tools only, a small saddle bag does the job on day rides: the Lezyne S-Caddy, Topeak Burrito Pack or Deuter Bike Bag 0.3 to 1.1.
Handlebar bags
Handlebar bags carry light, bulky items: the tent body, a sleeping mat or a jacket. The Topeak Frontloader, Barloader and Tubular Barbag Slim, Restrap Bar Pack and Canister Bag, Deuter Mondego HB 8 and USWE Handlebar Bikepacking Bag cover big rolls through to small bags for snacks and a phone. Check cable and brake-lever clearance on drop bars before you load one up.
Frame, top tube and stem bags
• Frame bag: heavy items, food and water, close to the bike's centre. Choose a full-frame bag like the Restrap Full Frame Bag Medium if you can give up bottle cages, or a half-frame such as the Topeak Midloader or Deuter Triangle Bag to keep them.
• Top tube and stem bags: snacks, phone, sunscreen. Topeak Toploader, Restrap Race Top Tube Bag, Stem Bag and Food Pouch, USWE Food Pouch.
Restrap Fast Straps, Topeak cage mounts and the Restrap Pannier Bag fill the gaps. For shelter, see our hiking tents.
Bikepacking in Australia
Routes like the Mawson Trail, the Munda Biddi and the Tasmanian Trail run long stretches between towns and water. Carry more food and water than a European route needs, and keep spares in the frame. In the Tassie wet or Victorian high country, roll-top or dry-bag designs keep your sleep kit dry; elsewhere, red dust gets into zips, so wipe them after each trip.
