It suits walkers who want a cool back and a stable carry on a day that is long on distance but light on gear.

Who it's for

Day hikers in warm country. Deuter rate it five out of five for hiking, and the 3-6 kg it is built around covers water, lunch, a rain shell and a warm layer for a full day out. Think the Glass House Mountains circuits, a hot afternoon on the Great North Walk, or the Coastal Track in the Royal National Park where the sun is on your back the whole way.

Capacity, and what actually fits

23 litres fits a 3 L bladder in its sleeve, a rain jacket, a fleece, lunch and a first aid kit, with a wet compartment inside to keep a damp shell off the rest. Stretch side pockets take bottles, the mesh front pocket takes a map, and the zipped top pocket holds sunscreen and keys. Hip fin pockets keep snacks and a phone in reach. The pack measures 57 x 28 x 18 cm.

How it carries

A flexi spring steel frame bows the back mesh away from you, so the pack meets you at the shoulders and hips and air flows through the gap. ActiveFit shoulder straps pivot with your stride, breathable padded hip fins with Pull-Forward adjustment draw the load onto your hips, and stabiliser straps plus a one-handed sternum buckle keep it from swaying on rocky descents.

Fitting it

The Futura 23 is one size for back lengths of 44-54 cm, which Deuter match to walkers around 170-195 cm tall.
