Soft flask pouches sit on the chest, poles ride in a front holster, and a bladder sleeve hides inside.

Who it's for

Trail runners and fast hikers out for two hours to a full day. Think a long loop on the Great North Walk, a race with a gear list in the Blue Mountains, or a summit run up Mount Kosciuszko from Thredbo. Deuter rate it five out of five for trail running and four for hiking, and the recommended load of 1-3 kg is a running kit, not a day pack. We stock the 13 because it carries a race-day mandatory kit without the jump to a full backpack.

Capacity and fit

13 litres takes a waterproof jacket, a thermal layer, a first aid kit, a head torch and food for the day. The vest measures 47 x 24 x 13 cm. Ergonomic vest shoulder straps with an elastic compression drawstring pull the load in snug, two adjustable sternum straps lock it across your chest, and side compression straps and a stretch inner pocket stop the contents shifting on rough descents. The soft back padding sits against your body like a garment, with a moisture barrier between your back and your gear.

Drinking and refilling

Soft flask pouches on both shoulder straps keep a drink right under your chin, so you can sip without breaking stride and refill at a creek in seconds. For longer days, the elasticated inner compartment holds a hydration bladder of up to 3 L. A zipped shoulder strap pocket keeps your phone, GPS or gels in reach, and two elastic side pockets take extra food or a beanie.

Poles and stowage on the move

The holster on the front of one shoulder strap carries collapsible poles, and you can pull them out or stow them without taking the vest off.
